Provenance |
The IOWA was crushed in the ice on February 4, 1915 near the Chicago harbor. Passengers and crew walked on the ice to shore. The remains are located abut a mile east and slightly north of Navy Pier in Lake Michigan. Divers discovered the wreck in the 1970s and recovered sinks, door locks, port holes, silver table service pieces, and dozens of other items. The date stamp and keys were found in August 1977, buried under several inches of sand and gravel in the vicinity of the ship's safe, whose door had been removed. The donor assumes that the items were located in the purser's office and came to rest in the same location after the ship's machinery was removed and the hull blasted to lower its bottom profile. |
